The innovation culture in modern Lithuanian organizations: values, attitudes and practicesPublication[Inovacijų kultūra šiuolaikinėse organizacijose Lietuvoje: vertybės, požiūriai ir praktikos]research articleSocial sciences = Socialiniai mokslaiThe article looks into the characteristics of the innovation culture of the Lithuanian enterprises that are involved in innovative activities. It uses the methodological framework that encompasses four dimensions of innovation culture: tolerance of risk, uncertainty and change, emphasis on mobility and flexibility, emphasis on networking and emphasis on learning. The survey was carried out in carefully selected 68 modern Lithuanian enterprises. On the level of organizational practices, most challenges are noticed regarding the tolerance of uncertainties. The problems are usually solved through the combination of strong leadership and consensus. On the level of values, materialist work-related values tend to prevail. However, some post-materialist values (e.g. creativity, tolerance and respect to others) are more strongly represented than on the level of society as a whole. The values and attitudes of modern Lithuanian organizations can be considered as generally favourable to the innovations. But a certain gap that is noticed between values, attitudes and organizational practices should be subject to further, more qualitative research. Managing innovations across the domains: challenge to the dichotomy of specialist vs. generalist skillsPublication[Inovacijų valdymo daugiadiscipliniškumas: iššūkis tradicinei spelialistoo vs. generalisto gebėjimų dichotomijai]research articleSocial sciences = Socialiniai mokslaiInnovations are being increasingly recognized as happening ‘at the intersection’ of disciplines, competences, technologies and cultures. It is an interdisciplinary process characterized by the interaction of different perspectives that leads to the emergence of new fields (e.g. nanotechnologies). It is also a crossdisciplinary process, in which the tools and perspectives developed in one area of human activity are used for solving problems innovatively in another area. It may also be a multidisciplinary process when the professionals from distinct fields provide their own perspectives on complex issue, which may later be integrated by the third party. Innovation process also has a degree of transdisciplinarity as the universal instruments and fundamental knowledge are being applied across a variety of domains. Many breakthrough innovations happen when the idea, established in one area of activity, is transferred and adopted in another area. In this paper, three dimensions of transferability are distinguished: transferability of technologies, competences and principles/models. [...] Innovation strategies in latecomer environments: alternatives for firms in small open economiesPublication[Įmonių inovacinės veiklos strategijos „vėluojančių“ ekonomikų kontekste]research articleSocial sciences = Socialiniai mokslaiThis paper is aimed at presenting and discussing the varieties of organizational strategies for innovation in the underdeveloped economic-institutional contexts. It is questioned whether the emphasis on institutional innovation systems (e.g. NIS, RIS), popular with policy makers, represents the key instrument for achieving innovation-driven growth in the latecomer economies and their firms. The latecomer environment can stimulate certain types of innovation strategies. However, to be sustainable in a longer run, they need to be supported by formal or informal institutions of the innovation system. The paper argues the need to combine institutional (top-bottom) and entrepreneurial (bottom-up) approaches, especially in the emerging innovation systems. Three sets of organizational innovation strategies are discussed in the latecomer context. Each innovation strategy has its potential strengths and weaknesses in the specific contexts, presented in the paper. Based on various cases of firms and empirical observations from the latecomer context, the paper concludes that entrepreneurial dynamics is not in the position to replace an institutional dimension of innovation system.- research articleEUNIP 2004 : Determinants of productivity, FDI and industrial structure: 8th annual conference 2004, 13-15 December, Birmingham, EnglandThe paper analyses the strategic industrial policy alternatives available for the new EU member states (based on the case of Lithuania) both during their pre-accession process and after the date of EU membership. The paper scrutinizes the specific policy context that surrounded the institutional choices made by the new member states during their neo-liberal transformation from the Soviet centrally-planned industrial policies towards the functioning market economy. The Eastern European countries (Lithuania specifically) are viewed in the global (US, South East Asian, Latin American) and regional / European (both on the EU and member-state level) contexts. The industrial policies inside the EU are thoroughly discussed in relationship with the new member states. The article underlines the contradictory role of the European Commission that, given its institutional asymmetry with regard to the pre-accession countries, contributed both to imposing the neo-liberal transformation agenda and, at times, an interventionist stance going outside the existing acquis. On the other hand, the paper acknowledges the constructive role played by the European institutions in promoting the strategic planning dimension in the economic governance of the new member states, although claims that this role was weaker than on the macroeconomic and legislative (adoption of the acquis) fronts. The progress of all former candidate countries in the latter aspects has been more marked, while institutions rendering specific competitive advantages remained largely underdeveloped. [...].

39243 2050 Introduction to the analysis of crime fiction [elektroninis išteklius] : a user-friendly guidePublicationbookKaunas : Vytautas Magnus University, 2011This text serves as an introduction to critical analysis of crime fiction in English. For each sub-genre a list of characteristics is provided. Some major authors like Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, Ian Rankin and Kathy Reichs are given closer attention. In addition, newer trends in crime fiction are discussed. Exercises for students and advice in carrying out research on crime fiction are also given.18268 3086 - bookKaunas : [Vitae Litera], 2015The idea to write this book primarily came from our intention to share what we have discovered about one of the greatest childhood miracles – play. For a number of years we have explored this phenomenon, yet its profound and extraordinary nature still continues to surprise us. Promotes development and, at the same time, is the greatest achievement of the child. Keeping this in mind, we designed our monograph for a few purposes. First, we wanted to present the results of the three-year project “Development of Self-Regulation in Play” attained in play research laboratory of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences. Second, we sought for the first time to discuss in Lithuanian language the theory of play based on cultural – historical psychology. Our objective was to formulate and present the key principles of the development of self-regulation through play activities. Finally, we aimed to describe the steps of practical use of joint (adult-child) play activities that help a child to develop a self-regulatory behavior during play. Why did we choose to focus on the development of self-regulation through play activities? Simply that a large number of worldwide studies show (Elkind, 1982, 2007; Singer, Singer, D’Agostino, DeLong, 2008; Frost, 2010) that children’s imaginary play is vanishing and that their imagination and self-regulation skills have deteriorated. Another observed trend is a clear opposition between play and academic learning (Miller & Almon, 2009; Nicolopoulou, 2010). Surveys reveal that currently selfregulation and executive functions are in the center of researchers’ attention worldwide and are among top ten studies in progress. [...]
