Zigmas Lydeka

Prof. Zigmas Lydeka was born on August 23, 1954, in the village of Žyniai, Vilkaviškis District. In 1977, he graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute, Faculty of Engineering Economy. Until 1980, worked as an assistant at the Department of Political Economy, Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. During 1980-1983, he completed his PhD studies at the Department of Economic Theory of Saint-Petersburg State University. In 1983, defended his thesis of Candidate of Science in Economics. After that, up to 1990, he worked as a senior lecturer and associate professor at the Department of Economic Theory, Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. From 1990, worked as an associate professor (1990-1993, 1994-1997) at the Faculty of Business and Management, Vytautas Magnus University (VMU), where from 1993 to 1994 also held the position of Vice Dean of the Faculty. In 1997, he was elected to the position of Head of the Department of Economics and Finance (until 1999), and from 1998 to July 2002 was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, VMU. From July 2002 worked as a professor at ISM University of Management and Economics and held the position of Vice Rector for Research. On May 24, 2006, was elected and on August 25, 2010 re-elected Rector of Vytautas Magnus University.

In 1993, his academic title of associate professor (conferred in 1988) was nostrificated by the Science Council of Lithuania and he was awarded a Doctor’s Degree in Social Sciences. In 1999, he was awarded a Habilitated Doctor’s Degree in Social Sciences, and in 2002 was granted an academic title of Professor. Research interests – philosophy of economics, methodology of system transformations, business theory and practice, reorganization of companies. Prof. Lydeka has published one monograph, over 100 scientific papers, overall amount of which is more than 50 author's sheets. He is a scientific editor of numerous textbooks, monographs and methodological materials, as well as an editorial board member of 2 international and 6 recognized Lithuanian scientific periodicals. Supervised 5 doctoral dissertations, chaired 5 habilitation committees, was a member of more than 30 doctoral thesis examination boards, 4 habilitation committees, 7 habilitated doctor's thesis examination boards, and was an opponent of more than 20 doctoral theses. He has made over 40 presentations at national and international scientific conferences, has been involved in numerous international scientific research projects and conducted applied research projects in Lithuania.

Until 2004 he was a member of the Higher Education Council of Lithuania, from 1999 to 2006 – a member of the Science Council of Lithuania and the Board of the Science Council (Chairman of the Commission on Finance), expert of Lithuanian Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education, expert of Methodical Centre for Vocational Education and Training.

In 2002-2003, he was awarded a State Scholarship of the Highest Degree granted to distinguished scholars. In 2009 was awarded a gold medal of Yanka Kupala State University of Hrodna.
