VMU is unique in Lithuania for its liberal study system and academic freedom which allows students to decide when and what subjects to take. Students are also provided with the opportunity to receive a certificate for a minor field of study together with their main diploma. At present VMU has the most developed studies in humanities and social sciences; however, art and theology, as well as physical and natural sciences (Informatics, Mathematics, Physics and Environmental Sciences) are more and more popular each year.
Studies at VMU are organised differently from other universities in Lithuania. During the first 2 years of the BA studies, students attend the basic subjects in humanities and social sciences, biomedicine and physical sciences, as well as arts. After the two year studies of general subjects students have two or three years to deepen their knowledge and gain new skills in the chosen specific field of studies.
