In most disciplines Doctoral degree can be pursued in English. Postgraduate students are required to carry out independent research and extensively familiarise themselves with research work that has been done in their field of study. The Doctoral degree normally requires at least four years of full time study.

Doctoral students of Vytautas Magnus university (VMU) may also apply for the Baltic Graduate School (BGS). It was founded by the consortium of Tallinn University, University of Latvia and VMU on October 3rd, 2008. BGS is an initiative to organise a more effective cooperation between Baltic universities in the field of doctoral education, to provide students aspiring for a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degree with more broad-based supervision and consulting, better access to relevant research in their areas.
