After the reestablishment of Vytautas Magnus University in 1989, it was the first university in Lithuania to introduce the three-level studies. After finishing them, one gains a BA or MA qualification or a Ph.D. degree. BA level studies last 4 or 5 years, during which students receive general university education and the professional preparation for a specific field; after the studies one gains a BA qualification.

The second level of studies (MA) last for 1,5 or 2 years; its purpose is to deepen or expand the BA graduate’s competences in the chosen field. A Ph.D. degree is received after finishing the third level or doctoral studies.

In some cases students may also choose between the full–time and part–time studies. The latter are more flexible, as their duration, the time for lectures and consultations, as well as the exam schedule are designed in such a way that the student could successfully combine studies at the university and professional activities.
