VMU Music Academy Chamber Orchestra
VMU Music Academy Chamber Orchestra was established in 2010 by the head of the Dept. of String Instruments Robertas Bliškevičius and several very motivated students of the Music Academy.
Since its inception, the orchestra has expanded and grown together with its members, who are now pursuing master’s degrees or already performing professionally with the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, Kaunas State Musical Theatre Orchestra, etc. The VMU Music Academy Chamber Orchestra seeks to retain a generation of young and talented musicians in Kaunas, and to create conditions for them to promote and represent Lithuanian culture with their music.
From the day of its inaugural concert, the orchestra has received a lot of positive feedback from the audience, which appreciated its enthusiastic, honest and professional performances. Supported by VMU Rector prof. Zigmas Lydeka, the orchestra started receiving permanent funding and became a professional collective of the university in 2012.
In September 2012, the orchestra travelled to Cyprus to perform at the Euro-Mediterranean Youth Music Expo 2012, an annual showcase featuring talented young musicians from Europe and the Middle East. The orchestra held a concert in the prestigious Rialto Theatre in Limassol, one of the largest tourist resorts in Cyprus.
The wide-spanning repertoire of the chamber orchestra stretches from the latest modern pieces all the way back to the Baroque era: it includes compositions by Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Felix Mendelssohn, Antonín Dvořák, Edward Elgar, Béla Bartók, etc. However, the orchestra does not limit itself to classics only: its youthful members are open to experiments and genre-transcending projects (performances with the most famous Lithuanian jazz artists, multimedia projects, collaborations with modern dance collectives, etc.). A large portion of the orchestra’s repertoire is taken up by modern Lithuanian music, some of it written exclusively for the orchestra.

About the Orchestra
Director of the orchestra is Rita Bieliauskaitė, Master’s student at VMU Music Academy. She says that the orchestra is of particular importance for the entire city of Kaunas, since it has never had its own chamber orchestra: “Vilnius has several orchestras of this kind, and Klaipėda also has one. Kaunas has not filled this cultural niche yet. I think that our orchestra will become yet another opportunity to gather promising young musicians and retain them in Kaunas”.
