VMU Expressed Solidarity With CEU
On 7 April, Chairman of VMU Council, HE President Valdas Adamkus, VMU Rector Prof. Juozas Augutis, Chairman of VMU Senate Prof. Zigmas Lydeka and President of VMU Students’ Council Greta Šmaižytė sent a letter on behalf of the academic community of VMU to HE the President of Hungary János Áder, in which they expressed solidarity with the Central European University (CEU) and concern regarding the amendments passed by the Hungarian Parliament which could result in the closing of CEU.
CEU, which has welcomed numerous VMU professors and students, may have to close down in Hungary because of the recent legal amendments. “[The amendments] restrict the functioning of the country’s universities and may result in the closing of the CEU, setting a dangerous precedent of limiting academic freedom and severely damaging not only the fruitful international collaboration between scholars in Hungary and around the world, but also consequently impairing international investment and employment opportunities in Hungary as a whole”, the letter says.
Everyone is welcome to sign the petition regarding CEU online, on the website of Change.org.
