VMU and Euroleague to Sign Cooperation Agreement
On Thursday 9 March, 11 a.m., at VMU Small Hall (28 S. Daukanto g., Kaunas), Vytautas Magnus University and Euroleague Basketball Community Trust will hold a press conference and sign an agreement of cooperation dedicated to the implementation of a joint study programme, Sports Business MBA by EB Institute. It is the only international study programme in Europe implemented together with the Euroleague: the organization chose VMU, a higher education school in Lithuania, out of all universities in the continent.
The press conference participants include Euroleague Basketball President and CEO Jordi Bertomeu, Euroleague Chief Operations Officer Eduard Scott, Euroleague Basketball Operations Officer Goran Šašič, VMU Rector Prof. Juozas Augutis, and other university representatives.
The launch of the VMU master degree programme of Sports Business is motivated by the relevance of this specialty in the international job market (sports segment). In the entire Europe, countries have been increasing investments in the sports sector, and the sector’s employment level has risen by almost 60 percent: about 800,000 sports sector jobs have been created in the EU member states. The Lithuanian Labour Exchange estimates that the greatest labour demand will be in the service sector, and particularly for the specialists of advertising, marketing and sales.
The study programme will prepare professionals who will be able to work in a wide range of international sports and business organizations. The students will obtain both the systemic understanding and working knowledge of all major areas of the contemporary sports business and management: marketing, finance, media and communication, law, strategy and economics.
While implementing the programme, Vytautas Magnus University will cooperate with Euroleague Basketball and Euroleague Basketball Institute, utilizing the international organization’s extensive experience, professional expertise in sports business, and wide network of social partners.
“The trust placed in us by an organization of such a scope as Euroleague Basketball both delights us and makes us feel obligated to justify it: both this one and other VMU study programmes prepare specialists who are equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge and abilities, analytical and critical thinking, and capability to work in the international market, rather than narrowly specialized graduates who would only meet the short-term demands of today. This is the cornerstone of a liberal arts university, which provides an interdisciplinary education as well as competences that are important in the dynamic labour market and does not restrict itself to the confines of specialized studies”, Assoc. Prof. Rita Bendaravičienė, the Dean of VMU Faculty of Economics and Management, explained.
The Dean also emphasized that ever since Vytautas Magnus University’s re-establishment in 1989, it has maintained its globally-oriented focus, a wide network of international lecturers, joint study programmes with the best European universities, and a study system based on the model first used by Harvard University.
For the last two years, VMU Faculty of Economics and Management has been ranked among the 700 best business schools in the world. It has been awarded the prestigious Eduniversal award and the rating of 3 Palmes of Excellence, which is given to Excellent Business Schools with reinforcing international influence. Vytautas Magnus University is one of the leading Baltic universities in the field of internationality.
