Intensive Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course

Each summer the University offers an intensive (4 weeks) Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Course. During the summer course students are offered an intensive program consisting of lectures, workshops and discussions, sightseeing tours and excursions to learn the Lithuanian language and deepen the knowledge about Lithuanian lifestyle. “Survival Lithuanian”

2 ECTS*

VMU offers an intensive and short (2 weeks) Lithuanian Language course before the beginning of semester for those who want to learn very basic of Lithuanian Language. Aim of the course is to introduce students to a very basic knowledge of Lithuanian that would help them to “survive” in Lithuania. In this intensive course students will learn to introduce themselves, to provide basic biographical information, to ask for the prices while shopping, to ask for directions, basic information at the university, to order food, as well as other useful everyday phrases in Lithuanian. This intensive course is structured around the sociocultural knowledge of Lithuanian Language.

Semester long courses

Each semester VMU offers 2 different levels of Lithuanian Language courses: Beginners level (A1), Intermediate level (A2). Level B1 is available if there are more than 5 registered students to the course.

Beginners level (A1)

The general objective of the course is that after following the requirements and completing the course students should be able to communicate in simple Lithuanian in various situations of personal and social life. During the course, students are expected to gain knowledge, practical skills and experience in comprehension and usage of the Lithuanian language on specific themes. The course aims at developing students’ communicative skills in A1 Lithuanian.

Intermediate level (A2)

This course is aimed at students who previously have had some exposure to Lithuanian or completed elementary (beginner level) Lithuanian course. The goal of this course is to help students to develop better oral, written, listening, and comprehension skills in Lithuanian. Students are introduced to a wide range of topics such as home, work, shopping, food, services, health, entertainments, weather, and other in order to achieve better fluency on variety of topics required for everyday interactions. The course aims to help students to achieve greater command of previously acquired grammatical concepts, as well as to introduce new grammatical material.

Upper-intermediate level (B1)

This course is aimed at students who previously have had some exposure to Lithuanian or completed intermediate level Lithuanian course. The course focuses on the development of conversational ability and building up student’s vocabulary. Reading and writing skills are developed as well. Students are introduced to a wide range of topics such as: conditions and wishes; people and their actions; interests and everydays activities; responsibilities, preferences, abilities; hobbies and entertainments, and other in order to achieve better fluency on variety of topics required for different interactions. The course aims to help students to achieve greater command of previously acquired grammatical concepts, as well as to introduce new grammatical material (e.g. participles).

The special VMU Lithuanian Language Studies scholarship for the semester/academic year long studies covers the tuition fee for the semester/academic year long course and accommodation in the dormitory of VMU during the study period at VMU.
