Graduate degree in this MA programme aims at preparing qualified regional study professionals to work in politics, public sector, business environment and NGOs. Graduates of the program are able to critically assess, design, analyse and evaluate different regional activities in Northern Europe from political, economic and cultural points of view. Master’s degree program combines different interdisciplinary fields and professional activities, including competences in theorising, analysing and understanding regions in general and the Scandinavian and Baltic Sea Regions  and their neighbourhood in particular, also learning one language of the region with the focus on key Nordic languages.

Competencies acquired

Upon completion of the graduate program successful student are expected to have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

1. Competences to integrate theoretical, empirical and methodological knowledge acquired during the studies in Scandinavian and Baltic Studies:

1.1. Knowledge of theories and models about regions, ability to critically assess the role of regions in international relations, regional cooperation and conflict, neighbourhood policies and apply underlying theories for analysis of institutions, state and sub-state actors involved in different collaborative projects.

1.2. Ability to identify and analyse political, economic, cultural, social and information changes and their implications for contemporary political practices of the states in the Northern European region.

1.3. Ability to apply comparative and qualitative research methodologies, in particular case studies, and analytical tools in research of Baltic and Nordic regions and their milieus.

1.4. Capacity to demonstrate a good understanding of political systems, the logic of post-Communist socio-political transformations, regional institutions of cooperation, the role of the EU, the relations of small and big states in the region, security aspects and development of regional identities.

1.5. Competence to show sufficient communication skills in one of the languages of Northern Europe.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the this master’s programme will have the possibility to work in various state, non-governmental and private institutions in Lithuania and abroad, namely, Lithuanian government institutions (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs), diplomatic missions (embassies, business, tourism), EU institutions,  and educational institutions, (e.g. Institutions of higher education, Institutes of Scientific Research). Graduates of the programme are also offered the possibility to continue their studies in a post-graduate programme in the field of Social Sciences.

Final evaluation

Final paper (Master’s thesis). The program is completed with the public defence of a Master’s thesis.

Admission requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, the Humanities or other Social Science field is required. Otherwise, graduates with bachelor degree from other fields must have other 6 social science ECTS credits, 4 ECTS credits of humanities and 10 ECTS credits of political science.

Complementary studies

Applicants who have not studied in a Political Science undergraduate programme are recommended to complete 18 credits of the Political Science programme. Graduates of social sciences are recommended to take courses Introduction to Political Science (6 credits), Introduction to International Relations (6 credits), and Political philosophy (6 credits).
