Michigan State University Professor to Teach Course at VMU Faculty of Law

On 16-25 May, visiting lecturer from Michigan State University, Prof. Bruce W. Bean, is teaching the course of Comparative Company Law at the VMU Faculty of Law.

The meaning and significance of comparative company law in the modern globalising world is indisputable. Companies keep overstepping country or region borders, while companies functioning even under exclusive jurisdiction cannot evade influence of various international and transnational factors which unavoidably demand understanding and expertise in regulating the corresponding regional and international legal systems.

Bruce W. Bean obtained doctoral degree at Columbia University in 1972. He can run legal practice in New York and California, has worked as judge’s assistant in the U.S. Federal Court, practiced law at various law firms and legal institutions, including as a Vice-President of a diversified financial services company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. For a while, he worked closely together with Rudolph Giuliani, who went on to become the Mayor of New York City.

Though Bruce W. Bean’s general scientific interests are mostly associated with company management and the law, the uniqueness of legal experience he has acquired is seen to be springing from his long-term work in Russia. While working here from 1995 to 2003, Bruce W. Bean was deeply involved in the Gore-Chernomyrdin Commission’s activities, chaired the American Chamber of Commerce in Russia, established the Russian Institute of Corporate Law & Governance, was engaged in many other activities. Also noteworthy is the fact that he kept close contact with especially important people both in Russia and the USA at the time. For example, in Russia he communicated with Boris Yeltsin, Viktor Chernomyrdin, Yevgeny Primakov, Sergei Stepashin, etc. In the USA, he had met with the then-President of the US Bill Clinton, Vice-President Al Gore, various people from the Clinton and Bush administrations, including the US Secretary of State Madeline Albright, Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin, Lawrence Summer and Paul O‘Neill, Secretary of Defence William Cohen and others, as well as individual members of the United States Senate.

Currently, Prof. Bruce W. Bean is one of the leading American authorities in the affairs of Russian economics and business environment. He has published and is working on numerous books or their parts, as well as countless scientific articles; his thoughts have been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Times of London, The Moscow Times, etc.
