Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy

The faculty is the leading Lithuanian centre for studies and research of political science, political philosophy, public administration, public communications, journalism, and regional studies. It offers modern international programmes of interdisciplinary character that have proven to be popular among both local and foreign students.

The faculty attracts students from all over the world by offering high quality study programmes in both Lithuanian and in English, extensive opportunities to improve at other European, American or Asian universities, and an open, collegial and multicultural environment.

Students are introduced to a flexible study system and a choice of subjects according to their own needs and hobbies. All of this provides them with excellent opportunities to become not just experts of their own field, but also critical thinkers who possess associated skills especially needed for successful careers and sustainable living in information-rich and networking contemporary societies.

The study programmes here pull in the brightest graduates and involve not just political science and diplomacy, regional and international politics, but public administration and communication studies as well – students are provided with the necessary skills for future work as media and PR specialists, public sector workers, employees at diplomatic structures, EU-related institutions in Lithuania and abroad, communication and media companies, etc.

The faculty is closely collaborating with the best universities in Europe and around the world. Every year, the Erasmus exchange programme and bilateral agreements allow students and teachers to visit universities in the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Norway, the USA, South Korea, Taiwan and other countries. Students gain a wealth of theoretical and practical knowledge and get to know foreign cultures and languages.

Since its opening in 2000, the faculty has been the home for the Academic Club of Political Scientists, which organizes Republican Student Olympics of Political Science, meetings and discussions with local politicians, scientists and public figures. In 2013 the club was awarded by the national Parliament as the leading academic youth organization in Lithuania. Students of public communications as well as their faculty colleagues are also engaged in various radio (www.VDUradijas.lt), TV (www. TVDU.lt), online media (www.Jauti.lt), and print journalism projects.

Just like other divisions of VMU, the faculty nurtures ideals of liberal arts, while its departments and centres maintain close collaborations. This leads to effective organization of studies, seminars, conferences and interdisciplinary scientific and applied research projects. The Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy is also involved in the implementation of the Interdisciplinary Master’s in East European Research and Studies (MIREES), a study programme launched in cooperation with four other European universities.

The lectures at the faculty are taught not only by local and visiting professors but also by diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, heads of Lithuanian representations abroad, members of the European Parliament, members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, specialists from various ministries, journalists, public organizations’ leaders, and experts. The students have great opportunities to do their professional internship in the Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, different Offices of the Seimas and the Government, other governmental as well as non-governmental institutions, and organisations.
