PREFACE

Rapid labour market changes set new qualitative requirements for the curriculum and methods of vocational education and training. The reality of vocational education and training requires more flexible pedagogical solutions that correspond to individual learners’ needs. Active teaching methods leading to learner independence, ability to communicate and cooperate, and search for necessary information in the databases of modern information technologies have become the obvious necessity of vocational education. VET institutions step by step are geting closer with the world of work becoming learning organisations that foster creative development of teachers and students. All these factors set new demands for initial and continuous vocational teacher training. The priority of teacher training researches are no longer discussed today. The discussion is focused now mainly on what kind of vocational teacher researches are necessary and why.

With respect to the actualities of vocational pedagogical science this issue of the journal presents research findings of various scientists in the field of vocational teacher education and training, the ways and methods suggested for the development of teacher education and training and education. K. Pukelis and R. Laužackas explore a significant issue in vocational teacher education and training and education by presenting the interrelation and interaction of “horizontals” (functional) and “verticals” (content) competencies in the teacher activity that define the structure of vocational teacher qualification. R. Kučinskienė and V. Kučinskas analyse the questions of vocational teacher’s social competence. Prof. B. Bonz from Stuttgart University investigates the advantages and disadvantages of various German models of vocational teacher training and provides recommendations for the development of vocational teacher education and training. J. Rützel discusses the ways of improving the quality of vocational teacher training through historiographical prism, E. Uhe deals with general education and vocational training integration challenges for educational policy and vocational teacher education and training, B. Fegebank reveals the problems encountered in preparing vocational teachers for special vocational activity areas. L. Sajienė focuses on modelling of the possibilities of nursing teacher education and training in Lithuania. K. H. Sommer reviews the aims and objectives of vocational pedagogy as a science discipline. V. Šernas considers the research maturity as a very important competence of vocational teacher that leads to the preparation of a teacher ability to reflect upon his own and learners’ activity.

The second part of the journal is devoted to the presentation of the newest scientific publications, the main project activities related to the development of vocational teacher education and training in Lithuania and the point of view of the experts of European Teaching Foundation on the possibilities of teacher education and training development. The defended doctoral dissertations and most interesting master theses related to various aspects of vocational teacher training are also annotated.

We hope the publications of this issue will be useful to our readers. Your suggestions, remarks and requests will help us to plan the content and publication of the journal more rationally, as the quality of the journal is the outcome of joint efforts of readers and publishers.
