As Lithuania is integrating to the European Union, the impact
of consolidation and concentration processes in the European and world financial
markets, are felt in the Lithuanian retail banking sector. After privatization,
commercial banks started to close their branches in Lithuanian regions. Most
individuals, living in rural areas were left with no access to financial services
near the place they live.
The main object of this research is to explore, if credit unions, as a cooperative
financial institution could play the role of commercial banks in the regional
retail banking sector. The results of the study of credit unions activities
in different districts of Lithuania show, that credit unions have more possibilities
to develop in those districts, where a macroeconomic situation is worse.
